Keeping Cooling Tower Water from Freezing During Weekend Shutdowns
When temperatures drop in New England, cooling tower freeze protection becomes a serious concern, especially when equipment sits idle over the weekend.
A New England food manufacturer recently approached BA Associates with exactly that problem.
Their cooling tower system needed to operate throughout the week, but during weekend shutdowns, water left in the exposed tower was at risk of freezing.
They needed a practical solution that would protect the equipment without complicating normal operation.
The Solution: A Remote Sump System
We worked with Delta Cooling Towers to provide a packaged Pump Tank System (PTS), featuring a remote sump tank, dual circulation pumps, piping, valves, and controls, all assembled on a common skid.
The concept is straightforward.
When the cooling tower shuts down, water from the exposed tower and associated piping can drain into a properly sized, freeze-protected remote sump tank.
When production resumes, the pumps restart circulation through the cooling tower system.
More Than Just Freeze Protection
Beyond addressing the customer's freezing concerns, the packaged skid offered another advantage: simpler installation.
Rather than sourcing the tank, pumps, piping, and controls separately, the customer received an integrated equipment package designed around the application.
This reduced field assembly and helped simplify coordination between the equipment suppliers and installing contractor.
Solving the Entire Application
At BA Associates, we work with manufacturers throughout New England to solve industrial cooling challenges.
Sometimes that means selecting a new cooling tower. Other times, like this project, it means finding a better way to manage the water already circulating through the system.
The goal isn't always to replace equipment. Sometimes it's to make the entire system work better.
