When my 10 year old son unwrapped a 3D printer Christmas morning, he started small; keychains, toys, little trinkets. But soon, his interest in all things mechanical had us experimenting with something a bit more ambitious. We uploaded a CAD file of one of our MTH Turbine pumps to see what the result would be. To our surprise, in just 15 minutes we had ourselves a miniature 2” replica turbine pump. Pretty cool.
We moved on to various blower CAD files, but they were far too complex for the printer. We decided to start from scratch using TinkerCAD, a program designed for kids. Together, we built each part from the ground up, focusing on printability, precision, and a design that could be assembled without glue or fasteners.
What began as a weekend project turned into a 10-month journey of trial, error, and a lot of late-night test prints until we had a model we were proud of.
Today, my son does much of the work himself. He designs the models in CAD, runs the printer, solders the miniature motors, and tests every blower to make sure it works. It’s been a hands-on learning experience, for both of us.
We now use these working 3D blower models as leave-behind gifts for customers, something fun and memorable to keep on their desk. People love hearing the story behind them, and for us, they serve as a perfect symbol of what BA Associates stands for: engineering expertise, family values, and a genuine love for what we do.
